Long before Vance had a hometown hero or groves of delicious peaches, it was on South Carolina’s historic map tracing its history back to 1766. Its Old Number Six Highway was originally a Native American trail and the town was once known as Vance’s Ferry. Its long history includes a span as a very busy crossroads and important link between Charleston and points to North Carolina and Tennessee.
Santee River traffic moved goods from the town to Charleston.
A very impressive post office building, built in 1827, was a point of pride for Vance.
